По результатам исследований, проводимых в ГНИЦ профилактической медицины в разные годы, представлены данные о распространенности основных факторов риска сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний в российской популяции; изучена их роль в суммарной сердечно-сосудистой смертности, смертности от ишемической болезни сердца и мозгового инсульта. Изложены доказательства, что смертность от сердечно-сосудистых заболеваний напрямую зависит от количества факторов риска, имеющихся у пациента.
